Joint Health and Safety Committee Support

The Ontario Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requires any workplace with more than 20 employees (or 5 employees where designated substances are in use) to have a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). It is the role of the JHSC to monitor, manage and improve the safety of the workplace.

The volunteer committee is to be made up of management and employee representatives who are specifically trained in the OHSA. If you answer yes to the following questions, your JHSC is likely performing satisfactorily:

  • Are inspections and meetings regularly scheduled and performed?
  • Are meetings focused and productive?
  • Are meeting minutes and action items documented?
  • Are assignments completed? Does follow up take place?
  • Are both workers and management happy with the progress?
  • Are monthly audits coming in “no hazards observed”?
  • Do the number of accidents/incidents confirm the audit results?

In our experience, often well-intentioned volunteers struggle to perform the legislated duties of the OHSA in addition to their other job responsibilities. If this is the case for your organization, we offer programs to support the committee and meet the OHSA requirements. These programs deliver timely, cost-effective and fully documented results.

“We struggled for years with our own in-house committee. With Veronica taking over it runs perfectly. Veronica comes every three months, does inspections with our staff, supervises the safety meetings and minutes. It also gives our staff someone to report to, making the committee a more serious commitment.”

JOINT HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE PROGRAM COMPONENTS INCLUDE

Meeting Management: We schedule meetings, perform audits, document minutes and follow up on assigned activities.

Workplace Inspection: We offer walkthroughs of plants, offices and other work areas with a trained professional eye quarterly in order to identify potential hazards. All postings, training and third-party Inspections are kept up to date.

Accident Investigation: We assist your Worker Representative with accident/incident investigations in determining the root cause, documenting the findings, creating a prevention action plan and proving due diligence.

Work Stoppages: We assist the JHSC members in their efforts to reach a mutually acceptable solution, preferably without involving the Ministry of Labour. We may play the role of mediator as needed.

Once an agreement has been reached, we help all involved parties move on productively.
